Simple Water Heater Maintenance That Saves You Money
Your water heater works hard every day, but most homeowners never think about it until something goes wrong. A little routine maintenance can add years to your water heater’s life and keep it running efficiently.
Flush the Tank Once a Year
Sediment builds up at the bottom of your water heater tank over time, especially in areas with hard water like Linda and Marysville. This sediment insulates the water from the heating element, forcing the unit to work harder and use more energy. Flushing the tank once a year removes this buildup.
Check the Temperature Setting
Most manufacturers set the default temperature to 140 degrees, but 120 degrees is plenty for most homes. Lowering the temperature reduces energy costs and lowers the risk of scalding.
Inspect the Anode Rod
The anode rod inside your tank prevents rust by attracting corrosive elements in the water. It wears out over time and should be checked every two to three years. If it is heavily corroded, replacing it is much cheaper than replacing the entire tank.
Know When to Replace
Most tank water heaters last 8 to 12 years. If yours is approaching that range and you are noticing rusty water, strange noises, or inconsistent temperatures, it may be time for a replacement. Tankless systems can be a smart long-term investment.
